Planet Space Scene in After Effects

So in this new type of “tutorial,” I will walk you through some basic tips on creating a earth or space scene using CC Sphere and a texture map. Now this tutorial was inspired by Iceflow Studio’s Photoshop tutorial: Space Scene. If you want to learn more about creating the scene in Photoshop, definitely check out that tutorial!

In After Effects, I’ll be showing you some ways to bring a little more life and animation to the scene, how to setup a basic environment with stars and dust, and show you how to setup the lighting and atmosphere of the earth. If you want more information on creating awesome planets, check out VideoCopilot’s tutorial.

Don’t forget to experiment and mess around, you can create some pretty awesome effects by animating the light height and matching it with the lens flare. Some other ideas to get you going:

  • Build the environment more, create a stronger atmosphere for the planet and the area around it. Try adding more clouds to the surrounding planet.
  • Animate the flare, try moving at a different location, add some flickering.
  • Try a different angle at the planet (maybe from the bottom or side), maybe add some depth of field, play around with camera movements.
  • Switch to 16 or 32 bpc for better brighter colors. Add additional space images to blend things in and make it more realistic.

Again, this was my first take at really sitting down and discussing some tips and techniques with you guys. It’s a great and quick way for me to sit down and explain some things without prior planning or work. It also saves me editing time so if you guys enjoyed quick tutorials like this, let me know down below!

Yes, it’s possible to animate the earth. Nice Plexus animation, like the colors and depth of field :)

      • Ben, I just found out that in Version11, you can’t add items to the object fodelr as like in version 10. Instead, you should use the content browser to point to them. I will go though the Content Browser soon.

Awesome tutorial dude. Thanks for taking the time to help us learn. One thing i did different was to duplicate the planet comp, put the light in between the two and turned down the opacity on the top layer, looks good. Thanks again.

Nice tutorial, but how do you get the “particles effect” ? I only have the cc particle world and am having trouble following you after you get there.

    • VinhSon Nguyen

I used Trapcode Particular in this video which is a paid plugin. If you mess around, you can also achieve the same look using CC Particle World.

  11. some tips are very useful to us in this tutorials , thanks sir

    • VinhSon Nguyen

    Hey Man,

This tutorial is very cool and helpful but how can I delete the CC Sphere’s lines? (The green lines)

    Here is an image:

    • VinhSon Nguyen

Purchase the full version of After Effects. You’re running a illegitimate or demo version of CC effects that come bundled with a licensed version of AE.

I’m following your steps but have run into a problem at the transcode particular part. When I bring in the particles, there is nothing there. I have played around with the settings with no luck. I’m new to AE6 but know CS6 pretty good. Can you please help me. I have team viewer 7 if you want to do a remote. Please help

    • VinhSon Nguyen

Possibly because your particles haven’t “emitted” yet. Try moving forward in the timeline and you’ll see them be born.
