How to Use Displacement Maps and Create Heat Waves

In this tutorial, I answer some of the questions I got on the Displacement Map effect and how to use it. With the displacement map, you can create many different effects such as heat waves for a desert or flame.

If you want to create distortion for your laser from the Dubstep Guns tutorial, precompose your final laser and make sure fill it with red so you can use it for a distortion map. Then apply the Displacement Map effect to a Adjustment Layer and set the Displacement Map Layer to your laser layer filled with red. You now have distortion following your lasers.

      Thanks man!

  5. Very helpful! Just one thing though… Couldn’t you just set the channel for displacement to alpha rather then red? That way it would take away the step of filling it with red.

    • VinhSon Nguyen

Yes, you could have just set the mapping to the Alpha channel to save time. I only set it to red so I could demonstrate what’s going on visually. Thanks again!
